About Hoffmann Mineral

Founded in 1903 and headquartered in Neuburg, Germany, Hoffmann Mineral is a manufacturer of a natural mineral filler, named Neuburg Siliceous Earth. The coating additives of Hoffmann offer good transparency, high abrasion-, weathering-, and scratch resistance. They can be used in metal coatings, plastic coatings, wood and film coatings, construction coatings and decorative paints. Hoffmann Mineral is committed to sustainability and CO2 reduction goals. It also has successful cooperation with Bavarian Associations for the protection of nature and indigenous species. Its product portfolio includes fillers like Siliceous Earth, kaolins, silicas, and surface modifiers.

Aktisil® VM 56

Aktisil® VM 56 by Hoffmann Mineral acts as a functional filler. It is an agglomerate of corpuscular silica and lamellar kaolinite. It is an activated Sillitin® Z 86, produced by modifying the surface with a vinyl functional group. Used either on its own or combined with extenders or flatting agents used in UV and electron-beam cured paints and varnish applications.

Optimum performance is achieved in binder systems which polymerize or cure due to a radically initiated reaction which include unsaturated polyester-, vinyl ester and acrylic resins and other radically cured systems.

It is also suitable for melamine and UF resins.

It retains the excellent properties of the base material as it possesses high filling ratio, outstanding dispersion behavior, good pigment dispersion (spacer effect), low abrasiveness, very low tendency to settle and good flatting effect.

It is quick-drying, has a slight flatting effect, and shows breathability, good scratch-, abrasion-, weathering-, chemical- and moisture resistance.

As compared with the base, Aktisil® VM 56 minimizes yield point (including a high solids content) and offers excellent mechanical properties such as increased tensile-, bending-, wet edge- & impact strength.

It achieves good transparency and exhibits good wettability even using binders with low polarity, minimal water absorption, high water vapor permeability & improved swelling characteristics.

It is also used in stoving paints/enamels-, special emulsion paints-, primer, plastisol-, pigmented-, anti-corrosive-, wood- & foil coatings.

It shows metering up to 50% depending on intended application.

The shelf life of product is 3 years.

Aktifit® VM

Aktifit® VM by Hoffmann Mineral acts as a functional filler. It is an activated Silfit® Z 91 produced by modifying the surface with a special vinyl functional group. It can be used either on its own or combined with extenders or matting agents. It is quick-drying, has a matting effect, and shows good scratch-, abrasion-, chemical-, water- & weathering resistance. Suitable for UV-cured- clear coats (varnishes) & powder coatings, pigmented-, wood- and film (UV/eximer curing) coatings. It is used in acrylic resins as well as unsaturated & peroxide-cured polyester & vinyl ester resins.

The by-products split off during the treatment reaction are largely removed during the production process, which firmly attaches the functional group to the filler surface and helps to minimize undesirable side effects.

Its special process technology provides high hydrophobicity and outstanding low moisture absorption even under very humid conditions.

During curing (hardening) of the coating, its vinyl groups react with the functional groups of the binder, especially in the presence of radicals.
It enhances the opacity (spacer effect) of pigments and acts as a replacement potential of titanium dioxide of up to 20% or increasing hiding power.

It achieves good transparency without yellow tint and a slight whitish glazing effect depending on formulation principle & loading in clear coats.

It exhibits good wettability even using binders with low polarity, and excellent dispersion properties even without grinding.

It retains the excellent properties of the base material as it possesses very high- brightness & color-neutrality, relatively low abrasivity, low sieve residues and low moisture content.

As compared with the base, Aktifit® VM minimizes yield point & low shear viscosity and offers excellent mechanical properties such as increased tensile-, flexural- & impact strength.

The recommended dosage level is up to 55% depending on the intended application likewise up to PVC 35.

It has a shelf life of 2 years.

Sillitin® Z 89

Sillitin® Z 89 by Hoffmann Mineral acts as a functional filler. It is a natural combination of corpuscular silica and lamellar kaolinite, which can be used on its own or combined with other extenders or flatting agents. Suitable for solvent-free systems, primers & fillers (also for automobile industry), varnishes, exterior & interior emulsion-, silicate- & industrial paints, and foil- & plastic- (soft-feel) coatings.

It exhibits excellent dispersion properties and slight flatting- & spacer effect in pigments.

It provides good transparency with a minimal yellow tinge in unpigmented coatings.

It is quick-drying and possesses high solids content as well as abrasion-, weathering- & scratch resistance.

It offers a high filling ratio, good wet edge strength and breathability.

It has pseudoplasticity, soft sediment, moderate yield point, low abrasiveness and very low tendency to settle.

It is used in metal (primer & surfacer)-, electrophoretic-, powder- and water-based corrosion protection (epoxy clear coat & DTM acrylate hydrophobic) coatings.

Sillitin® Z 89 is also used in film- and wood coatings such as UV/eximer-curing, dispersion-based clear coats, exterior topcoats and breathable primers.

It is designed for interior dispersion-, silicate & dispersion silicate-, facade- & road marking paints and dispersion coatings for concrete.

It complies with the standards on basic foodstuffs of the BfR and FDA.

The recommended metering level is up to 50% depending on the intended application.
