Chainguard™ I-15 by Dow is a polymerization inhibitor. It is 15 percent aqueous solution of N-isopropylhydroxylamine (IPHA). It is an excellent multi-purpose shortstop for free-radical polymerizations. It provides excellent mooney viscosity control and effective popcorn polymer prevention. It allows production of nitrosamine-free rubber. It inhibits corrosion and possesses reduced carryover of shortstop into recycled monomer. The replacement of conventional shortstops, such as diethylhydroxylamine (DEHA) and sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate (SDD), with Chainguard™ I-15 results in cost savings and helps plants to minimize concerns of hazardous air pollutants, formed by SDD exposure to strong acids and high temperatures. The elastomers shortstopped have a more desirable color that those stopped with SDD/DEHA or DEHA alone. It exhibits a better effective level than SDD and DEHA. It is used widely to shortstop emulsion styrene-butadiene and acrylonitrile-butadiene polymerization reactions in the production of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) elastomers respectively. This product can also be used to effectively stop other commercially important free-radical processes, such as suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride, and emulsion polymerizations of chloroprene and fluorinated olefins.
