Flash-rust Corrosion Inhibitors for Coatings and Inks

Nalzin® FA 180 by Elementis is a flash-rust corrosion inhibitor designed for aqueous paint systems. It prevents the formation of flash rust during the drying process on iron-containing substrates. It is based on an organic zinc complex with a low nitrite addition.

• It exhibits a strong affinity for iron substrates, forming a protective anionic passivated layer after drying.
• It provides corrosion resistance and improved weathering properties.
• During the drying process, it transforms from a water-dispersible form into a non-water-dispersible, insoluble zinc compound and reducing water sensitivity.
• It is suitable for various water-dilutable paint systems such as alkyds, acrylics, epoxies, and dispersion paints.
• It enhances the rust resistance of the dried paint layer and acts as an in-can corrosion inhibitor during storage.
• Additionally, it can be used as a temporary rust inhibitor for metal surfaces when applied as a 2% emulsion through spraying, offering reliable protection against early rust formation after paint application.
• Recommended dosage level is 0.1-0.5% as flash-rust inhibitor and 0.1-0.3% as in-can corrosion inhibitor.
• Nalzin® FA 180 has a shelf life of 2 years from date of manufacturing.

HALOX® FLASH-X® 152 by ICL is an ultra-low-VOC flash rust inhibitor based on anodic passivating oxyanion. It is effective in preventing general flash rusting and weld seam corrosion. It is highly effective at relatively low loading levels as compared to other high and low VOC flash rust inhibitors.

• It is compatible with a variety of water-based resins without causing film sensitivity or package stability problems which can occur with other flash rust additives.
• It is heavy metal-, APEO-, and HAPS free.
• HALOX® FLASH-X® 152 is designed for industrial and architectural paints.
• Recommended dosage level is 0.5-1.5% to stop flash rust and 1.0-2% to stop galvanic corrosion.

Nalzin® FA 179 by Elementis is a corrosion inhibitor for aqueous paint systems to counteract the formation of flash-rust. It is also suitable for application as an inhibitor against the formation of in-can corrosion and temporary rust inhibitor for metal surfaces.

• It can be applied to various types of water-dilutable alkyd systems, acrylics, epoxy and dispersion paints.
• The typical use level is 0.1-0.5% calculated on the total amount of paint.
• Nalzin® FA 179 has a shelf life of 3 years from the date of manufacture.

LOPON® DV by ICL is a flash rust corrosion inhibitor-based on disodium phosphate. It is an aqueous solution that can be used in water-based emulsion paints. It is suitable for exterior wall paints.

• LOPON® DV is recommended for premium plasters, renders, and other aqueous building products.
• It has a shelf life of 3 years.

HALOX® FLASH-X® 330 by ICL is an effective, nitrite-free, low odor, liquid flash rust inhibitor. It is used in the manufacturing of water-based protective coatings for inhibition of in-can rusting for unlined metal containers. It is recommended for high gloss systems and does not detract from gloss.

• It is added to water jet-blasting solutions to provide temporary protection prior to applying the protective coating.
• HALOX® FLASH-X® 330 is easy to use and can be incorporated at any stage of coating manufacture.
• It can also be easily and effectively post added to any coating system.
• The dosage level for flash-rusting application is 0.5-2% and for in-can rusting is 1.5-2.5%.
• It has a shelf life of 24 months.

Flexisperse™ CW-40 by Innovative Chemical Technologies is a unique functionalized polymer system designed to impart a clear, colorless, readily removable, surface protectant and soil resistant coating. Provides flash rust and corrosion resistance to bare copper, steel, brass, cadmium and zinc. It provides temporary protective surface coating which withstands weathering effects such as acid rain and salt water. The hard film coating also provides protection against abrasive impacts from particulate matter. It imparts gloss to a surface but adds no color or haziness. The coating can be removed with 1:64-1:32 aqueous dilution of Flexiclean CWR cleaner or other alkaline cleaner concentrate. It is recommended for construction & rental equipment, automotive OEM protection during transit and metal stock in storage, transit or work-in-progress. Flexisperse™ CW-40 has a shelf life of 12 months.

HALOX® 350 by ICL is a more active 97-100% solids organic corrosion inhibitor designed to stop flash rust, and in-can corrosion, and provide temporary corrosion protection. It is an effective replacement for toxic nitrite-based flash rust inhibitors.

• It has a recommended dosage level is 0.2-0.8% based on total solids formulation.
• It has a shelf life of 36 months.

HALOX® FLASH-X® 150 by ICL is used in the manufacture of water-based protective coatings as an effective liquid additive for inhibition of flash rust and in-can rusting. It is highly effective at relatively low loading levels as compared to other flash and in-can rust inhibitors.

• It has demonstrated excellent flash rust inhibitive performance on various metal substrates ranging from iron, steel, and galvanized iron to galvalume and zincalume.
• It is effective for inhibiting in-can rusting in lined and unlined metal containers.
• It is compatible with a variety of latices without causing film sensitivity or package stability problems that can occur with other flash rust additives.
• It is also an effective additive for stabilizing metal substrates when using the water-blasting method of surface restoration.
• It is easy to use and can be incorporated at any stage of coating manufacture.
• It can also be easily and effectively post added to any coating system; however, as with any additive, compatibility should be checked prior to use.
• Recommended dosage level is 0.25-1% for flash rusting, 0.50-1.5% for in can rusting and 1.50-3% for water blasting.
• HALOX® FLASH-X® 150 has a shelf life of 24 months.

HALOX® 550 by ICL is an inorganic-organic hybrid corrosion inhibitor to protect water-based and solvent-based coatings. It offers multiple advantages as listed.

• It has thin-film applications, easy to disperse, post-addable, reduces white rust on galvanized, reduces black rust, increases hydrophobicity, improves anti-fingerprint, no effect on gloss.
• It reduces silver, aluminium oxidation, high temp stable, non-flammable, pH stable, low freeze point.
• HALOX® 550 is used in clear coats, direct-to-metal, latex primers, coatings, acrylic emulsions, water-dispersible alkyds, and alkyd emulsions, polyesters, epoxy, urethane, and high gloss coatings.
• The dosage level is 1-4% for water-based acrylic, 0.5-2% for alkyd, 1-4% for epoxy, 0.5-3% for urethane and 0.5-4% for hybrids & others.
• It has a shelf life of 12 months.
• It is listed in the TSCA Chemical Substances Inventory.

Nubirox FR-10 by Vibrantz Technologies (formerly Chromaflo) is a nitrite-based liquid rust inhibitor. It is effective at low loading without detracting from the long-term performance properties. It is formulated to prevent flash rust and in-can rust in water-based paint systems without detracting from the long-term performance properties of paints and coatings. Nubirox FR-10 can be incorporated at any stage in the coatings manufacturing process.
