Ditetrahydrofurylpropane by Penn A Kem is a bidentate coordinating ether that dramatically affects organolithium structures and reactivities. DTHFP is especially useful in controlling the structure of polymers produced from anionic polymerization of dienes (butadiene, isoprene), styrene-diene copolymers, hydrogenated styrene-butadiene block copolymers and liquid polybutadienes. In these systems, DTHFP is used as a modifier for the organolithium catalyst to increase the level of 1,2-microstructure (vinyl structure) in the polyene. Ditetrahydrofurylpropane (DTHFP) high polymerization temperatures can be used while still making high vinyl polymer and higher conversion rates from increased reaction temperatures translates into improved productivity from shorter batch cycles. Its low volatility and odor of DTHFP provides advantages in the isolation of the polyene and recycle as well as recycle and purification of the polymerization solvent.
