Polylactic Acid (PLA)

Based on 512 products - Last update on the Nov 4, 2025

Polylactide (PLA) appears as a glossy, transparent to translucent thermoplastic ranging from colorless to milky white with a somewhat brittle character and high surface hardness. Key features include biodegradability under industrial composting conditions, biological origin from renewable resources, good stiffness and tensile strength, excellent printability for 3D applications, and low toxicity. PLA finds applications in biodegradable packaging, food service items, 3D printing filament, medical implants, and agricultural films.

PLA competes with petroleum-based plastics like PS, PET, and PP. Current market trends show accelerating adoption driven by consumer demand for sustainable materials and regulatory pressure on single-use plastics. PLA varieties include amorphous grades, semi-crystalline versions, stereocomplex PLA, and various blends with other biodegradable polymers to enhance flexibility or toughness.
