SEA SALT EXTRACT

Last update on Mar 2, 2026

Sea Salt Extract is derived from evaporated seawater or concentrated saline solutions. It contains primarily sodium chloride along with trace minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, and sulfates. It provides skin conditioning, mild exfoliation, and soothing benefits through osmotic effects and mineral supply. This water-soluble or dispersed ingredient is commonly used in bath salts, body scrubs, foot soaks, cleansers, masks, and some skincare products targeting oily, acne-prone, or detoxifying needs. It helps balance oil, refresh skin, and deliver a mineral-rich feel.

What is SEA SALT EXTRACT used for?

  • Skin conditioning: Maintains skin in good condition and supports hydration balance. Frequently used in moisturizers, masks, and body products for refreshed, toned skin.
  • Absorbent / Mattifying: Absorbs excess sebum and oil for a matte finish. Ideal in oil-control cleansers, scrubs, and masks for oily or combination skin.
  • Soothing & mineral supply: Provides trace minerals and mild calming effects. Common in bath soaks, foot treatments, and after-sun products for detoxification and comfort.

Origin

Sea Salt Extract is obtained from natural seawater through solar evaporation or controlled concentration processes. It is followed by filtration and extraction (often aqueous or glycerin-based) to isolate the mineral-rich soluble fraction. The raw material comes from oceans or salt lakes (e.g., Dead Sea, Himalayan salt sources). Cosmetic grades are purified to remove heavy metals and impurities, yielding a clear solution or powder compatible with natural and mineral-based formulations.

Safety Profile

Sea Salt Extract is considered safe for cosmetic use. It has a low hazard rating from EWG (typically 1) and minimal concerns for irritation, sensitization, or toxicity at typical concentrations (0.1-10%). It is well-tolerated across skin types, including sensitive, though high concentrations may cause mild stinging on compromised skin due to salinity. Non-comedogenic and generally suitable for most users.
