Re:Chemistry by GFBio

About Re:Chemistry by GFBio

Established in 2013 and headquartered in France, GF Biochemicals developed the Re:Chemistry platform as the world's first commercial-scale producer of levulinic acid derivatives directly from biomass. Its polymer additives portfolio includes bio-based monomers, levulinic acid, ketal esters, and levulinate derivatives serving as non-toxic plasticizers for flexible plastics including PVC and biopolymers. Products are derived from (hemi)cellulosic feedstocks and are readily biodegradable, non-flammable, and REACH and US EPA TSCA compliant.

Levulinic ketals

Produced using Segetis' Javelin™ technology, Levulinic ketals by Re:Chemistry by GFBio is a broad family of bio-based compositions with performance advantages in many applications. Enabled by the development of selective ketalization of levulinic acid esters, these compounds have broad solubility enabling their use as cleaning solvents or coupling agents in liquid formulations. When extended by trans-esterification, Levulinic ketals can make effective plasticizers for a range of plastic compounds including PVC, can make polyols for polyurethane materials and can be extended for use in polyester thermosets or thermoplastics. Used in automobiles, fabrics, plastic bottles, cell phones, shoes and building materials.

Levulinic Acid

Levulinic acid. It is a carbon-based compound (C5H8O3) derived directly from biomass. Its high conversion yields improve efficiency, while reducing waste and cost. Synthetic versatility allows for various downstream transformations and production of valuable derivatives. It is an excellent non-toxic antimicrobial that extends product shelf life. Levulinic acid has been recognized by the US Department of Energy as a potential biobased building block. Its derivatives can be used as non-toxic plasticizers for flexible plastics.
