About Avantium

Avantium, founded in 2000 and headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands, is a commercial-stage company focused on renewable and circular polymer materials. As a spin-off from Shell, it develops innovative technologies for producing sustainable building blocks from biomass or CO₂, with global partnerships to advance fossil-free chemistry. The company operates R&D labs in Amsterdam and pilot/commercial plants in Geleen and Delfzijl, emphasizing high-performance, recyclable polymers with superior barrier properties and lower carbon footprint. For the polymer additives industry, Avantium offers FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid) as a key bio-based monomer and building block, along with related intermediates via YXY® Technology. These enable the production of high-performance polymers like PEF, serving as sustainable alternatives or modifiers in polyesters, polyamides, coatings, and packaging applications for enhanced barrier, mechanical strength, and recyclability.

MEG (Avantium)

MEG (Mono ethylene glycol) by Avantium is derived from glucose via catalytic conversion, a direct hydrogenolysis process. It is produced using proprietary MEKONG technology. It is a cost effective solution as compared to MEG derived from fossils. Suitable applications are polyester fibers, PET film, bottles.

PEF Fibers

Developed using Avantium’s YXY technology, these fibers have potential applications in textiles and carpets. It is bio-based polyester fiber.
