Polymer additives for Medical Packaging

Mevopur™ Healthcare Functional Additives by Avient (Formerly PolyOne) are non-PFAs additives that protect and enhance the performance of the polymers used in medical devices, diagnostics and pharmaceutical packaging. They cover a wide range of functionalities such as friction reduction, gamma sterilization protection, UV protection for transparent packaging, radiopacity, reduction of static build-up, low retention properties, and clarifying of transparent applications. These are formulated without animal derived substances.

Millad® ClearX™ 9000 by Milliken is the next generation clarifying agent. It sets a new standard for value, aesthetics, and operational efficiency in transparent PP applications. It is developed to deliver ultra-clear transparency at reduced additive loading levels. It offers lowers extraction and migration rates. It improves processing compatibility and eliminates the need for segregated virgin and PCR resin streams, enabling greater composition flexibility. Millad® ClearX™ 9000 is recommended for food packaging, home storage and medical applications. It has broad FDA conditions of use approval (A-J), opening doors for its use across a wide spectrum of food-contact applications.

Baerostab MTS 1200 by Baerlocher is a methyl tin mercaptide. It acts as a heat stabilizer. It provides outstanding early color, transparency and easy processing. It is used for the stabilization of rigid calendered sheets as well as for the vacuum thermo-forming of food and pharmaceutical packaging. The recommended dosage is 1-2 phr. It is registered under EU2002/72.

Tri nonyl phenyl phosphite by CarboQuimica acts as a chelating agent, stabilizer and antioxidant. It is used in various types of plastic such as PVC, polyethylene, polypropylene, and rubber. It offers excellent thermal stability and initial color. Tri nonyl phenyl phosphite is suitable for pharmaceutical and blister packaging. It is FDA approved for use in food contact products.

CAB-O-SIL® DURAMOLD™ 2150 by Cabot is a medium-high surface area fumed silica. It exhibits an increased reinforcement in high temperature vulcanizing (HTV) elastomers. It is tailored for maximum performance in high strength, hardness and transparency elastomers. It is characterized by a highly aggregated structure with minimal impurities. CAB-O-SIL® DURAMOLD 2150 is used in cable bushings, seals, gaskets, O-rings, boots and vibration dampers as well as in reinforced insulating hoses, grommets, sockets, cable seals and terminals catheters. It is also applicable in valves and bellows, respiratory masks, kitchen tools, diving masks, footwear and swimming caps.

Plastistrength® 770 by Arkema is a lubricating acrylic processing aid that brings enhanced processability for vinyl compounds. Provides very good lubricity and metal release properties to vinyl formulations while imparting high optical properties and surface quality to the end products and retaining printability.

• It replaces external lubricants by providing efficient antisticking effect without any plate-out issue.
• It is a premium solution to improve the surface quality of finished articles and prevent plate-out issues.
• Recommended for PVC and CPVC applications where good metal release from process equipment is required such as high-speed extrusion, calendering, injection molding and blow molding.
• Plastistrength® 770 is commonly used in PVC formulations for food or pharmaceutical packaging.

3-Methoxy-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoromethyl propionate (MTPME) by Shandong Huaxia Shenzhou is used as a solvent. It is an important special fluorinated fine chemical. Colorless and clear liquid with aroma. It is inflammable and relatively non-toxic. Shows a stable performance and easy decomposition at high temperature. Mainly used for synthesizing key intermediates used in production of perfluoro carboxylic acid resin and an important raw material for producing perfluoro or partial fluorinated vinyl ester. 3-Methoxy-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoromethyl propionate (MTPME) is widely applied in production of pharmaceutical intermediates and fluoropolymers.

Baerostab MTS 1220 by Baerlocher is a methyl tin mercaptide. It is an effective PVC (polyvinyl chloride) stabilizer. It is used to make calendered stiff PVC films and sheets. It is also utilized in the packaging of food and pharmaceuticals.

• The suggested dosage is 1.0-2.0 phr.
• Baerostab MTS 1220 is registered under REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals).

Clearstrength® C-140 by Arkema Additives is a methylmethacrylate-butadiene-styrene (MBS) core-shell grade and it acts as an impact modifier. It offers good impact resistance, high clarity, crease-whitening resistance with good toughness to vinyl formulations. It is compatible with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) for the production of transparent films and sheets. It is recommended for food packaging and pharmaceutical industry. Clearstrength® C-140 is designed for use in calendered film and extruded profiles.

Clearstrength® C-320 by Arkema is a methylmethacrylate-butadiene-styrene (MBS) core-shell impact modifier. Provides high optical properties and clarity. Imparts excellent impact strength and transparency. Recommended for high quality films, sheets and bottles. Clearstrength® C-320 is used in PVC formulations for food and pharmaceuticals.
