Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) appears as an opaque, rigid semi-crystalline thermoplastic with a light tan to brown color in its natural state. Key features include exceptional chemical resistance, excellent thermal stability, inherent flame retardancy, dimensional stability, and good electrical properties. PPS is primarily used in automotive under-hood components, electrical/electronic parts, industrial pump components, and chemical processing.
Alternatives include PEEK and LCP. The industry is trending toward developing grades with improved impact resistance and processing characteristics for complex, thin-wall components. PPS is available in various formulations including linear and crosslinked structures affecting melt characteristics, glass-fiber reinforced grades, carbon-fiber reinforced versions, and specialty grades with PTFE or other additives for reduced friction in bearing applications.
