DMDM Hydantoin. Acts as a preservative. It is supplied as a 55% active clear solution. It is effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and is best used with parabens or IPBC to provide a broader spectrum of activity in both leave-on and wash-off products. It is compatible with cationics, anionics, non-ionics, and proteins. It has good water solubility, which makes it a popular choice for clear products, such as clear shampoos, hair gels, etc. DMDM Hydantoin is approved for use in personal care products in the EU at up to 0.6%. It is considered a 'safe as used’ preservative in the USA. It is allowed at up to 0.3% in rinse-off products in Japan with suitable labeling. Recommended addition level is between 0.1-0.3% of the final product.
