Surfactants, available as liquids, powders, or pastes, reduce surface tension, enabling oil and water to mix. They cleanse, foam, and emulsify. They effectively remove dirt while maintaining hydration, which is essential in shampoos, body washes, and micellar waters. 

Types range from mild amphoteric (cocamidopropyl betaine) to stronger anionic (sodium lauryl sulfate). Sulfate-free and biodegradable options are trending. Regulatory guidelines ensure safe concentrations, particularly for potential irritants.
