Depilatory Agents
Category overviewDepilatory agents, often found in cream, gel, or lotion form, dissolve keratin bonds in hair, allowing for painless removal without shaving. They offer a smooth finish that lasts for days and are commonly used in body, facial, and sensitive-area hair removal products.
Popular INCI ingredients in this segment include calcium thioglycolate and potassium hydroxide. The industry is moving toward odor-controlled and conditioning formulations. Regulations focus on maintaining safe pH levels to minimize potential irritation.
Toiletries: Depilatory creams:Cream Base for Reactive Hair Care/Depilatories
Acrylates/Ceteth-20 Itaconate Copolymer provides thickening and stabilization to this difficult-to-thicken system. This formula can be used as a starting point for any high pH application like hair relaxers, depilatories or hair permanent waving lotions.
Toiletries: Calendula Depiliatory Cream
by Croda
This depilatory cream is based on Crodafos CES, a finely-balanced complex blend of fatty alcohol and phosphate esters, which was originally developed as an emulsifying and conditioning wax for high pH hair relaxer systems. Emulsions based on Crodafos CES exhibit shear thinning, promoting the combined release of oil and water from the system. Crodafos CES is particularly useful for depilatory products where rapid penetration of the hydroxide ion results in shorter contact times and significantly lower skin irritation potential. The inclusion of Calendula oil, an extract of Marigold flowers, soothes dry skin whilst generating an attractive marketing claim.
