What is SODIUM METHYL COCOYL TAURATE used for?

Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate is used as a natural substitute to harsh sulphates and silicones for its effective surfactant properties. It is found in many personal care and hygiene products like face washes, anti-acne products, shampoos, body washes, and toothpaste.

  • Skin care: It works as a cleanser and blends the oil and water well to clean impurities however, it does not strip the natural pH of your skin giving it a nice and soft after-feel. Since it is a non-irritant, it can be used for sensitive skin, even for people with a skin condition called rosacea
  • Hair care: It is commonly used in shampoos to make it sulphate-free. It provides a high foaming and mild surfactant activity and is mild to the scalp making it a preferred choice in medicated and anti-dandruff shampoos

Origin

Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate is usually manufactured by dissolving taurine (coconut's amino acid) into a mixture of sodium hydrate, isopropyl alcohol and water. A solution of lauric acid chloride and sodium hydrate is added to this mixture and stirred. This is followed by addition of a solution of calcium chloride and hydrochloric acid to the mixture. This mixture is then filtered and dried to form a white powder. It can also be made by heating coconut acid, with sodium methyl taurate solution and boric acid at 200°C to distill the water.

It is exceptionally mild with very low eye and skin irritation potential, making it suitable for sensitive, baby, and atopic skin. Biodegradable and well-tolerated at typical use levels (1-15%). The American Association of Dermatologists recommends using sulphate-free shampoos usually containing sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, for people with rosacea.
