What is PROPYLENE GLYCOL LAURATE used for?

Propylene Glycol Laurate is a multifunctional ingredient having emollient, solubilizing, and cleansing properties. It offers its benefits in both the skin and hair care industries.

For skin: Propylene Glycol Laurate moisturizes the skin and leaves it supple by forming a barrier on the surface. By improving the texture of skin care products, this ingredient helps ensure the even application of formulations. It stabilizes oil-in-water emulsions while also helping dissolve oil-soluble ingredients like essential oils and fragrances.

For hair: Propylene Glycol Laurate smooths the hair shafts and provides light conditioning. Its gentle cleansing property is quite effective in products like shampoos. This ingredient can also be found in leave-in conditioners, hair serums, and anti-frizz products.

Origin

Propylene Glycol Laurate is made by esterifying lauric acid (a fatty acid) with propylene glycol. The reaction takes place in the presence of a catalyst at controlled temperatures. Water, which forms as a byproduct, is continuously removed for the reaction to complete. The resulting Propylene Glycol Laurate is filtered and purified.
