PHLORETIN

Last update on Jul 3, 2025

Phloretin is an effective antioxidant used in cosmetics for its anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and brightening properties. Derived from apple tree bark, it fights the damage caused by environmental stressors on the skin and prevents wrinkles and dark spots. Inhibiting melanin-producing enzymes, it reduces hyperpigmentation and improves skin tone. Phloretin is often used alongside vitamin C for added benefits. It also enhances the skin penetration of other active ingredients in a formulation. In its raw form, Phloretin appears as a white to off-white powder with poor solubility in water. It is commonly found in antioxidant serums, brightening treatments, and anti-aging creams. The chemical formula of Phloretin is C15H14O5.

What is PHLORETIN used for?

Phloretin is primarily a skin care ingredient with powerful antioxidant, anti-aging, and brightening benefits. It neutralizes free radicals caused by radiation and pollution, protecting the skin cells that lead to premature aging of the skin. It is a useful addition in products targeting uneven skin tone as it treats dark spots and hyperpigmentation. This potent ingredient also helps soothe skin conditions like acne, rosacea, or eczema by reducing inflammation. Phloretin also improves the skin penetration of active ingredients, helping them absorb deeper and act more effectively. It is commonly added to antioxidant serums, brightening moisturizers, and sunscreens. Although not common in hair products, Phloretin can be used to help scalp health and reduce hair thinning.

Origin

Phloretin is derived from apple tree bark, leaves, or peels - which are first dried and ground into a fine powder. Using the solvent extraction method, polyphenols like phlorizin are pulled out of the powdered apple tree bark. This resulting substance undergoes hydrolysis to release phloretin.
