PEG-12

Last update on Sep 17, 2025

Peg-12 is highly prized in cosmetics for its humectant and solvent properties. When used on the skin, it attracts water to the outer layers, helping maintain hydration. In formulations, it aids the mixing of other ingredients to form a stable product and enhance its texture. It also ensures the even distribution of these ingredients on the skin. Additionally, Peg-12 is used in hair care for its conditioning benefits. This ingredient is valued for its effectiveness and low cost. For this reason, it is found in a range of different beauty products like lotions, creams, shampoos, conditioners, lipsticks, soaps, and toothpastes. However, Peg-12 does not find a place in organic cosmetics due to its synthetic production. It is also not good for the environment.

What is PEG-12 used for?

In skin care:

  • Maintains hydration by attracting water to the outer layers of the skin.
  • Dissolves other ingredients uniformly in a product and improves the texture.
  • Gives creams, gels, and serums a silky feel without any greasiness.

In hair care:

  • Attracts moisture to the hair fibers, reducing frizz and dryness.
  • Improves the manageability of hair and reduces friction between them.
  • In shampoos, Peg-12 makes foam creamier and less harsh.

In toothpastes:

  • Keeps toothpastes from drying out in the tube.
  • Contributes to a creamy texture and prevents it from feeling chalky.
  • Aids the even distribution of active ingredients.

Origin

Peg-12 (polyethylene glycol) is a synthetic ingredient made by ethoxylation, wherein 12 units of ethylene oxide gas are added to either water or ethylene glycol. This results in the final ingredient - a high viscosity liquid or a soft white paste. It is purified to remove residual impurities such as 1,4-dioxane, which is carcinogenic in humans. Additionally, Peg-12 is stored in a sealed container in a cool, dark place to prevent discoloration and degradation.

It is important to note that the ethoxylation manufacturing process is quite criticized due to the toxic and carcinogenic nature of ethylene oxide gas, especially for the manufacturers. The process is also very polluting and energy-intensive. Extreme safety measures are required to carry out the process harmlessly.

Safety Profile

Peg-12 has a strong safety record if a high-purity, cosmetic-grade ingredient is used. It does not cause side effects on healthy skin. However, pegs should be avoided on damaged skin as they may penetrate and cause irritation. Further, Peg-12 is non-comedogenic and does not clog pores. Even if safe, this ingredient is not used in clean beauty products as it is petroleum-based and has synthetic origins. Additionally, Peg-12 is not safe for the environment as its biodegradability is limited, and it accumulates in nature.
