OLEYL ERUCATE

Last update on Jul 23, 2025

Oleyl Erucate is a versatile emollient, conditioner, and texture enhancer used widely in personal care products. It not only moisturizes the skin but also forms a lightweight, breathable layer on top that prevents the skin from drying out. It imparts softness, smoothness, and a velvety feel to the skin. Oleyl Erucate is often compared to Jojoba Oil due to their similar benefits. However, Oleyl Erucate is a more cost-effective replacement for Jojoba Oil. In addition, unlike Jojoba Oil, this ingredient also enhances the texture and feel of cosmetics while giving them a glossy appearance. Additionally, it aids the even distribution of actives and pigments in products like sunscreens.

What is OLEYL ERUCATE used for?

Being both a moisturizer and conditioner with texture-enhancing properties, Oleyl Erucate is considered quite versatile in cosmetics. It is a good replacement for Jojoba Oil - which has almost similar benefits but is more expensive. Oleyl Erucate is widely used in both skin and hair care products.

For skin: Oleyl Erucate is a potent emollient that traps moisture on the surface of the skin and prevents it from drying out. It provides a silky, non-greasy after-feel - which is great for dry skin. Since it reduces water loss, Oleyl Erucate is also effective for barrier support and making the skin resilient against environmental stressors. Further, this ingredient improves the viscosity and spreadability of skin care products.

For hair: Oleyl Erucate conditions the hair and reduces frizz. Often used in conditioners, serums, and hair oils, it adds shine to the shafts without weighing them down or making them greasy. Oleyl Erucate also adds gloss to products that enhances the visual appeal.

Origin

Oleyl Erucate is made by the esterification of oleyl alcohol and erucic acid. Under controlled heat, this reaction produces water and Oleyl Erucate. While the water is removed, Oleyl Erucate is purified and stabilized for use in cosmetics. In its raw form, Oleyl Erucate appears as a yellowish oil having a low viscosity. Its chemical formula is C40H76O2.
