Hydroxypropyl Cyclodextrin is a modified cyclic oligosaccharide derived from starch. It has a unique toroidal (doughnut-shaped) molecular structure with a hydrophilic outer surface and a lipophilic inner cavity. This allows it to form inclusion complexes with various lipophilic molecules, improving their solubility, stability, and bioavailability in cosmetic formulations. It is widely used in serums, creams, toners, and fragrance products to enhance the delivery of active ingredients, reduce irritation, and improve overall formula stability.

What is HYDROXYPROPYL CYCLODEXTRIN used for?

Solubilizing / Complexing: Encapsulates and stabilizes lipophilic actives, fragrances, and essential oils in water-based systems. Frequently used in serums and toners for better ingredient delivery.
Skin conditioning: Improves skin feel and helps reduce irritation from certain actives. Common in sensitive skin and anti-aging formulations.
Stabilizing agent: Protects unstable ingredients from oxidation and degradation. Ideal for vitamin serums, retinoid products, and fragrance encapsulation.

Origin

Hydroxypropyl Cyclodextrin is produced by the chemical modification of β-cyclodextrin (derived from enzymatic degradation of starch) through reaction with propylene oxide. This hydroxypropylation process increases its water solubility and complexing ability. It is a semi-synthetic carbohydrate derivative widely used in both pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.

Safety Profile

Hydroxypropyl Cyclodextrin is considered very safe for cosmetic use with a low hazard rating from EWG (1). The CIR Expert Panel has assessed cyclodextrins and their derivatives as safe as used. It is non-irritating, non-sensitizing, and well-tolerated across all skin types, including sensitive skin. Approved by the EU COSING database for skin conditioning, chelating, and solvent functions in rinse-off and leave-on products.
