CYCLODEXTRIN

Last update on Jul 31, 2024
Cyclodextrin is an ingredient that works mostly in the background to enhance solubility and stabilize other ingredients in a formulation. It provides a controlled release of active ingredients, prolonging their effects and improving their efficacy. Further, it is also used for its odor-masking and texture-enhancing benefits. In its raw form, Cyclodextrin appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder. Since it is odorless, it becomes suitable for formulations where a neutral smell is essential. This ingredient is popular in the cosmetic industry since it is versatile, water-soluble, and has the ability to form inclusion complexes. It is also good for the environment since it is biodegradable.

What is CYCLODEXTRIN used for?

Cyclodextrin is widely used in cosmetics for its ability to enhance the performance and stability of active ingredients. They improve the solubility of poorly soluble compounds, stabilize sensitive ingredients like vitamins and fragrances, and provide controlled release, prolonging the efficacy of actives. Cyclodextrin also helps mask odors and improve the texture and feel of formulations. Commonly found in skincare products like creams and serums, hair care items such as shampoos and conditioners, and makeup products like foundations and lipsticks, Cyclodextrin play a vital role in enhancing product quality and consumer experience.

Origin

Cyclodextrin is a cyclic oligosaccharide that comes from starch, typically corn or potato starch. The production involves enzymatic conversion using cyclodextrin glucanotransferases (CGTases), which hydrolyze the starch into linear dextrins and then cyclize them into ring structures. The resulting cyclodextrins are separated, purified, and dried to remove impurities and moisture. Finally, they are ground into a fine powder and packaged for use in cosmetics.

Safety Profile

Cyclodextrin is a safe and non-irritating ingredient when used within the recommended concentration of 0.1% - 5%. Adverse reactions are rare but mild irritation or dryness can occur in case of very high concentrations. It is generally non-comedogenic and does not cause acne. Furthermore, Cyclodextrin is also safe for the environment. Since it is derived from plant starch, this ingredient is vegan and generally halal (if processed without any haram substances or methods).
