HYDROXYPHENYL PROPAMIDOBENZOIC ACID

Last update on Feb 27, 2026

Hydroxyphenyl Propamidobenzoic Acid (often abbreviated as HPPA) is a synthetic skin-soothing active. It is derived from the structural combination of tyrosol-like and para-aminobenzoic acid motifs. It is highly effective at reducing neurogenic inflammation, calming itch, and alleviating sensations of discomfort, burning, stinging, or tightness. This white to off-white powder is widely used in sensitive-skin products, anti-itch creams, after-shave lotions, post-procedure care, baby care, and formulations. It targets irritated, atopic, or reactive skin, where it provides fast, long-lasting relief and supports barrier recovery.

What is HYDROXYPHENYL PROPAMIDOBENZOIC ACID used for?

  • Skin soothing & anti-itch: Rapidly reduces itch, stinging, burning, and neurogenic inflammation. Frequently used in anti-itch creams, calming serums, after-sun products, and post-peel treatments for immediate comfort.
  • Skin conditioning: Strengthens the skin barrier and improves tolerance to irritants. Ideal for sensitive, atopic, or compromised skin in moisturizers, masks, and daily care products.
  • Anti-inflammatory support: Inhibits release of pro-inflammatory mediators (substance P, CGRP). Common in redness-reducing formulas, rosacea care, and products for irritated or post-procedural skin.

Origin

Hydroxyphenyl Propamidobenzoic Acid is produced synthetically via amide coupling of 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid (phloretic acid, derived from tyrosine metabolism or chemical synthesis) with 4-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). This is followed by purification. It is a biomimetic molecule inspired by natural skin-soothing pathways but fully manufactured for high purity, consistency, and stability in cosmetic formulations.

Safety Profile

Hydroxyphenyl Propamidobenzoic Acid is considered safe for cosmetic use. It has a very low hazard rating from EWG (typically 1) and minimal concerns for irritation, sensitization, or toxicity at typical concentrations (0.1-2%, often effective at 0.5%). Clinical studies show excellent tolerability even on atopic or irritated skin, with no significant systemic absorption. It is non-comedogenic and well-suited for sensitive, baby, and compromised skin.
