ETHYLHEXYL POLYHYDROXYSTEARATE

Last update on Mar 2, 2026

Ethylhexyl Polyhydroxystearate is a highly structured, polymeric emollient ester formed from 2-ethylhexanol and polyhydroxystearic acid (a polymer of 12-hydroxystearic acid). It provides a non-occlusive, protective film on the skin, delivering long-lasting hydration, softness, and a smooth, velvety feel without greasiness. This golden-yellow viscous liquid is valued as a "wrapping and protective cosmetic honey" for its comb-like molecular structure, offering film-forming, soothing, and barrier-supporting benefits. It is commonly used in moisturizers, serums, sunscreens, makeup (foundations, lip products), and protective treatments. It is especially valued in natural-leaning or high-performance formulations seeking silicone-like elegance with biodegradability.

What is ETHYLHEXYL POLYHYDROXYSTEARATE used for?

  • Emollient / Skin conditioning: Softens and smooths skin with a rich yet lightweight feel. Frequently used in creams, lotions, serums, and body products for lasting hydration and a velvety finish.
  • Film forming / Protective: Forms a non-occlusive, breathable film to reduce moisture loss and protect against environmental aggressors. Ideal for barrier creams, after-sun care, and anti-aging formulations.
  • Texture enhancer: Improves spreadability, reduces tackiness, and provides a luxurious after-touch. Common in makeup bases, sunscreens, and lip products for elegant application and stability.

Origin

Ethylhexyl Polyhydroxystearate is produced synthetically by esterification of polyhydroxystearic acid (polymerized 12-hydroxystearic acid from castor oil-derived sources) with 2-ethylhexanol. The process creates a highly structured, comb-shaped polymer ester. While the base materials (castor oil-derived) are vegetable-sourced, the final product is fully synthetic with excellent stability. It is biodegradable and often palm-free or sustainably sourced in commercial grades.

Safety Profile

Ethylhexyl Polyhydroxystearate is considered safe for cosmetic use. It has a low hazard rating from EWG (typically 1) and minimal concerns for irritation, sensitization, or toxicity. It is non-comedogenic, well-tolerated across skin types (including sensitive), and poses low risk at typical concentrations (1-20%). Its large molecular size limits penetration, and it shows no significant systemic effects.
