What is CI 15985 used for?

CI 15985 is a highly concentrated organic orange color pigment used in makeup products like lipstick, nail polish, and face powder. It is usually used in water-based cosmetic recipes for enhancing color of the cosmetic formula however, it should be avoided in formulations that may stick to the skin. It has been recommended to be used at a concentration of 0.1-3% based on desired color intensity, and upto 3% in lipsticks.

Origin

CI 15985 is manufactured by diazotizing 4-aminobenzenesulphonic acid using hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrite or sulphuric acid and sodium nitrite. The diazo compound is coupled with 6-hydroxy-2-naphthalene-sulphonic acid. The dye is isolated as the sodium salt and dried.
