Safety Profile

Tartrazine appears to cause the most allergic and intolerance reactions of all the azo dyes, particularly among asthmatics and those with an aspirin intolerance. It has a moderate hazard rating from EWG (typically 4-6) due to the potential for allergic reactions, especially in aspirin-sensitive or tartrazine-sensitive individuals. Rare links to hyperactivity have also been reported, mostly from food-related studies. It is well-tolerated in rinse-off products with low skin penetration. Labeling is required in the EU for the 26 allergens when present above thresholds. It may have potential allergenicity but is not likely to be mutagenic or carcinogenic in humans.
