BROMELAIN

Last update on Feb 13, 2026

Bromelain is a mixture of proteolytic enzymes extracted primarily from the stem (and sometimes fruit) of the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus). It functions as a gentle enzymatic exfoliant, anti-inflammatory agent, and skin conditioner. By breaking down proteins in the stratum corneum, it promotes cell turnover and smooths skin texture. Bromelain is valued in exfoliating masks, peels, cleansers, anti-aging serums, and brightening treatments for its ability to reduce dullness and improve radiance. It is also used in soothing products to calm irritation without the harshness of mechanical or strong chemical exfoliants.

What is BROMELAIN used for?

  • Enzymatic exfoliation: Gently removes dead skin cells and surface proteins. Frequently used in enzyme peels, masks, and cleansers for smoother texture and brighter complexion.
  • Skin conditioning: Softens skin and supports barrier recovery. Ideal for moisturizers, serums, and after-treatment products targeting dry, rough, or dull skin.
  • Soothing & anti-inflammatory: Reduces redness and irritation. Common in sensitive-skin formulations, after-sun care, and calming masks for comfort and recovery.

Origin

Bromelain is naturally present in the stem and fruit of the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus). It is extracted mainly from the stem (a byproduct of pineapple processing) through aqueous or enzymatic extraction. This is followed by filtration, concentration, and drying (often as a powder or stabilized liquid). The process yields a high-activity enzyme complex rich in cysteine proteases. It is 100% plant-derived, biodegradable, and widely used in natural and clean beauty formulations.

Safety Profile

Bromelain is considered safe for cosmetic use at typical concentrations (0.1-5 %), as assessed by the CIR Expert Panel (safe as used in proteolytic enzymes). It has a low hazard rating from EWG (1) with minimal concerns for irritation or toxicity when properly formulated. It is milder than AHAs/BHAs, showing low stinging potential. Rare allergic reactions may occur in individuals sensitive to pineapple or enzymes; patch testing is recommended.
