BEHENTRIMONIUM METHOSULFATE

Last update on Apr 17, 2026

Behentrimonium Methosulfate is a quaternary ammonium salt and is mainly used as an antistatic, conditioning, softening, hydrating agent in hair care products. It is also useful for improving the texture of the product. It is in the form of white or off-white solid and is positively charged. It is often compared with Behentrinonium Chloride, which is derived from canola oil and functions primarily as a conditioning agent in hair care products. The key difference is that behentrimonium chloride does not require a stabilizing agent, while behentrimonium methosulfate requires a stabilizing agent.

What is BEHENTRIMONIUM METHOSULFATE used for?

Behentrimonium Methosulfate is used in skin care and hair care products.

  • Hair care: It is used in hair & beard care products such as conditioners, hair masks, shampoos. It reduces the friction between the hair shafts by neutralizing electrical charges, providing slip, and improving the combing, general feel, and manageability of the hair. Reduction in friction between the hair shafts may also help to reduce breakage and damage. It creates a thin film on the hair, which helps to protect the hair from moisture loss. This is very helpful for high porosity hair-type that quickly gets depleted of moisture. This ingredient is used specifically in shampoos and conditioners for curly hair, to restore hydration leaving it softer and shinier
  • Skin care: In the skincare industry, it is used in lotions, creams, facial cleanser, soap, foot moisturizer, hand cream etc. It acts as a surfactant by reducing the surface tension and contributes to the even distribution of the product when it is used. It also has the added benefit of improving the texture of the product. It helps to improve the spreadability and usability of the formulation
