4-TERPINEOL

Last update on Mar 19, 2026

4-Terpineol (also known as p-Menth-1-en-4-ol or Terpinen-4-ol) is a naturally occurring monoterpene alcohol and the primary bioactive compound in tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia). It has a fresh, herbaceous, woody, and slightly spicy scent. In cosmetics it is valued for its strong antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, purifying, and soothing properties, especially against acne-causing bacteria (P. acnes), fungi, and certain viruses. This colorless to pale yellow liquid is widely used in acne treatments, purifying cleansers, scalp tonics, deodorants, foot care, after-shave products, and natural antiseptic formulations. It is often used as a standardized tea tree oil fraction or isolated compound for targeted efficacy and reduced sensitization risk compared to whole tea tree oil.

What is 4-TERPINEOL used for?

  • Antimicrobial / Purifying: Exhibits strong activity against bacteria (including Propionibacterium acnes), fungi, and some viruses. Frequently used in acne gels, spot treatments, cleansers, scalp treatments, and deodorants for purifying and odor-control benefits.
  • Skin conditioning / Soothing: Calms irritation, reduces redness, and supports skin recovery. Ideal for sensitive or acne-prone skin products, after-shave balms, and post-procedure care.
  • Perfuming / Masking: Provides a fresh, herbal note and masks unwanted odors. Common in natural deodorants, body washes, shampoos, and functional products.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Helps reduce inflammation and supports wound healing. Used in soothing creams, masks, and targeted treatments for irritated or compromised skin.

Origin

4-Terpineol is naturally abundant in tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia), where it constitutes 30-50% of the oil. In cosmetics it is most often obtained by fractional distillation of tea tree oil to isolate and concentrate the compound (≥98% purity in cosmetic grades). It can also be synthesized from other terpenes (e.g., γ-terpinene or α-terpinene) or limonene. Cosmetic-grade 4-Terpineol is highly purified to minimize sensitizing impurities found in crude tea tree oil (e.g., 1,8-cineole). It is 100% natural-origin when derived from tea tree, renewable, and available in organic-certified grades.

Safety Profile

4-Terpineol is considered safe for cosmetic use. It has low to moderate hazard rating from EWG (typically 1-3) and significantly lower sensitization risk than whole tea tree oil (due to removal of 1,8-cineole and other irritants). It is well-tolerated at typical concentrations (0.1-2%; often 0.5-1% in acne products). Rare allergic reactions may occur in individuals sensitive to tea tree or monoterpenes. Patch testing is recommended. It is non-comedogenic and suitable for acne-prone and sensitive skin.
