Levulinic acid. It is a carbon-based compound (C<sub>5</sub>H<sub>8</sub>O<sub>3</sub>) derived directly from biomass. Its high conversion yields improve efficiency, while reducing waste and cost. Synthetic versatility allows for various downstream transformations and production of valuable derivatives. It is an excellent non-toxic antimicrobial that extends product shelf life. Levulinic acid has been recognized by the US Department of Energy as a potential biobased building block. Its derivatives can be used as safer solvents with high solvent power in coatings.
