Viscosity Depressants

Viscosity depressants are typically clear, low-viscosity liquids or light esters that are added to coating formulations to reduce overall viscosity without compromising film integrity. Functionally, they help optimize flow, leveling, and application properties—particularly in high-solids systems—by improving the ease of application and reducing the need for excessive solvent use. They are used in automotive and industrial coatings. 

Industry trends are leaning toward non-HAP, low-odor, and bio-based options that enhance sustainability without affecting performance. These additives are available in solvent-compatible, waterborne, and UV-curable variants. Reformulations continue to align with VOC content limits and air quality regulations under frameworks such as EPA, REACH, and SCAQMD.
