Toughening Agents

Based on 65 products - Last update on the Jun 26, 2025

Toughening agents are usually clear to slightly opaque liquids or finely milled powders designed to enhance the mechanical resilience of coatings. By improving impact resistance, flexibility, and crack propagation control, these additives ensure coatings can withstand thermal cycling, vibration, and mechanical stress. They are especially valuable in automotive, aerospace, and heavy-duty industrial coatings.

Market trends are driving the development of advanced toughening agents that maintain clarity and strength while meeting low-VOC and non-hazardous material criteria. Toughening agents are available in reactive and non-reactive sub-types, allowing formulators to tailor impact performance across different coating chemistries while staying compliant with REACH and other regional safety standards.

Hypro® 1300X35 ATBN

by Huntsman

Hypro® 1300X35 ATBN by Huntsman is an amine terminated butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer. Its amine structure is based on N-aminoethylpiperazine (N-AEP). This reactive polymer is a 100% solid liquid rubber which is used to improve the adhesion, toughness, flexibility and impact resistance of thermoset resin systems including epoxies, vinyl esters, unsaturated polyesters, acrylics as well as urethanes. It also increases low-temperature mechanical properties.

Hypro® 1300X35 ATBN is used predominately with other amine functional compounds to improve product performance when added to thermoset resin systems.

It is suitable for construction, industrial, and transportation coatings, including concrete floor coatings, protective/maintenance coatings, aerospace coatings, and automotive/transportation OEM coatings.

It has a shelf life of 180 days.
