Surface Conditioners / Surface Modifiers

Based on 1994 products - Last update on the Jun 26, 2025

Surface conditioners are typically clear to slightly opaque liquids or dispersions used to optimize substrate preparation before applying coatings. By modifying surface energy and enhancing wetting properties, they help coatings adhere more uniformly and securely. This results in better film formation, improved leveling, and fewer surface defects. Thus, they are particularly beneficial in high-performance architectural, automotive, and industrial coatings.

Surface conditioners are trending toward water-based, solvent-free, and multifunctional variants that promote adhesion while minimizing formulation complexity. Available in both solvent-based and water-based formats, these products are also being reformulated to comply with tightening global standards on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs).
