Chelating / Complexing Agents for Coatings and Inks

HALOX® XTAIN® L-47 by ICL is a zinc-free, ammonia-free, volatile organic compound (VOC)-free liquid tannin stain inhibiting additive. It is designed to stop tannin bleed in various waterborne coating systems such as acrylic emulsions and polyurethane dispersions (PUD) applied to a variety of wood species for example, redwood, merbau, and oak.

• It offers superior performance without the need for Zn²⁺ cations thus conforming to European ecolabel requirements.
• HALOX® XTAIN® L-47 provides similar efficiency as its predecessor HALOX® XTAIN® L-44.
• Recommended dosage level is 1-3% based on total formula weight.

Trilon® B by BASF is thylenediaminetetraacetic acid and its sodium and ammonium salts. Acts as a chelating agent and forms stable complexes. It is particularly effective for chelating heavy metal ions such as iron, manganese, and copper. Trilon® B is designed for use in industrial coating applications. The shelf of the grade is 2 years.

HALOX® XTAIN® L-44 by ICL is a very effective liquid tannin stain-blocking additive that provides high performance and good compatibility in most water-based coating systems. It contains zirconium chemistry which is more efficient as a chelator. It has excellent tannin stain blocking properties that can be achieved without the need for zinc oxide which is required to achieve performance by most tannin blocking polymers on the market today.

• It eliminates the need for zinc oxide without sacrificing performance, resulting in improved package stability and shelf life of the coating system.
• Recommended dosage level is 1-3% based on total formula weight.
• HALOX® XTAIN® L-44 has a shelf life of 24 months.

HALOX® XTAIN® A by ICL is a white, nonrefractive, tannin stain inhibiting pigment used in protective coating systems. It contains zirconium and aluminum cations which chelate phenolic side groups in tannic acid. It is a highly efficient tannin stain inhibitor providing a high level of performance and compatibility in a variety of resin systems such as styrene-butadiene latexes, acrylic latexes, vinyl acrylic latexes, and solvent-borne alkyds.

• Recommended dosage level is 1-3% based on total formula weight.
• HALOX® XTAIN® A is barium and antimony-free and has a shelf life of 36 months.

HALOX® CZ-170 by ICL is a white, nonrefractive, corrosion and tannin stain inhibiting pigment used in protective coating systems. It is an effective replacement for zinc oxide. It can also be used in high gloss (+75 gloss units at 60°) and thin film applications.

• Recommended dosage level is 2-5% by total formula weight in multi-substrate waterborne systems and 0.5-2% by total formula weight in high gloss and thin film systems, for both water and solvent-borne coatings.
• HALOX® CZ-170 has a shelf life of 36 months.

HALOX® RC-980 by ICL is an organic additive designed to convert red rust to a black iron oxide. It converts the rust within minutes of the coating application and forms a black iron oxide barrier which can further be top-coated with water or solvent-based paints.

• It can be used in slightly acidic waterborne vinyl or PVDC binders applied to rusted steel substrates.
• It does not contain tannic acid, oxime chelates, phosphates or phosphoric acid.
• It has a dosage level is 3-6% for water-based coatings and 7-10% for solvent-based coatings as supplied on total formula weight.
• HALOX® RC-980 has a shelf life of 12 months.

CUBLEN ACS 402 by Zschimmer & Schwarz is a good complexing agent and a universally applicable inhibitor for various mineral deposits. It is a unique hypochlorite stable aminomethylen phosphonate.

• It is utilized in a variety of industries, including aerospace/aircraft, automotive/transportation, building and construction, consumer products and home goods, fibers and textiles, ink and graphic arts, and pipes and tubes.
• It is a flame retardant and corrosion resistant grade.
• It acts as a plasticizer as well as an anti-scaling agent.
• It is used in pigment preparations as well as metal, plastic, powder, container, and coil coatings.
• CUBLEN ACS 402 is a protective and dispersing agent, surface conditioner, and rheology modifier.

Dispex® Ultra FA 4404 by BASF is a partially neutralized chelating agent suitable for use in the manufacture of pigment suspensions, emulsion paints, slurries, mainly inorganic pigments and viscosity reducer.

• It combines the properties of a chelating agent and polyphosphate with those of an organic dispersant thus yielding highly concentrated, stable and low-viscosity inorganic pigment suspensions.
• Dispex® Ultra FA 4404 is recommended architectural, industrial, paper and paper board coating.

HALOX® BW-100 by ICL is a white, nonrefractive, tannin stain inhibiting pigment used in protective coating systems. It has been specifically designed as a tannin stain inhibitor providing performance and compatibility in a variety of resin systems such as acrylic latexes, vinyl acrylic latexes, and styrenated acrylic latexes, and solvent-based alkyds.

• The dosage level of HALOX® BW-100 is 5-10% based on total formula weight.
• It has a shelf life of 36 months.

FutureChem® CDS by FutureFuel Chemical Company is a unique chelating agent for hard water and iron ions. It can be used in various formulations to create a protective layer to prevent corrosion on metal substrates. The catechol moiety of the group can function as an adhesion promoter. It finds application as detergent additive, photographic chemical, cement accelerator and in vehicle/wheel wash formulations.
