Alkyd vs. acrylic coatings: how do they rank on the durability scale?

Alkyds offer better flow, leveling, and initial gloss, but yellow, chalk, and become brittle faster outdoors. Acrylics offer better long-term UV resistance and flexibility. Many now choose acrylics for exteriors, alkyds for specific interior/industrial uses.

What does "oil length" mean in alkyd resins?

It describes the proportion of oil in the resin. Short-oil alkyds dry faster and are harder but less flexible; long-oil alkyds are more flexible and better for exterior wood but dry more slowly. Choosing the right length balances these needs.

Why might an alkyd coating yellow or become brittle over time?

Alkyds cure through oxidative crosslinking that continues gradually even after the coating feels dry. Combined with UV exposure, this ongoing reaction can cause yellowing, brittleness, and eventual cracking.

Why do alkyd-based paints need anti-skinning agents in the can?

Since alkyds cure by reacting with oxygen, resin at the air-liquid interface in a partially used can will start curing and form a skin if unprotected. Anti-skinning agents block this until the can is reopened.
