Graphene-enhanced marine coatings get R&D boost through Nova Graphene collaboration
Last update on Jun 5, 2026
Coating performance and durability under demanding marine conditions remain persistent engineering challenges. A new R&D collaboration now brings together Nova Graphene, Salt Separation Services LLC (UK), and Memorial University – with the support of Seaspan Shipyards in North Vancouver – to advance graphene-enhanced marine coating technologies through Canada's Industrial and Technological Benefits (ITB) program.
Expanding real-world application potential
The collaboration centers on the continued development of CarbonEra™ graphene-enhanced marine coatings. According to Nova Graphene, the program is designed to support performance and durability outcomes while advancing next-generation materials innovation within marine environments. Memorial University provides third-party research and testing support.
"This collaboration represents another meaningful step in the continued advancement of our CarbonEra™ technology platform," said Paul Beasant, CEO of Nova Graphene. "Working alongside Salt Separation Services through the ITB framework, and in conjunction with Seaspan, allows us to continue expanding the real-world application potential of graphene-enhanced marine coatings in demanding operational environments."
The project also highlights the role of Seaspan's NSS-related industrial benefits activities in supporting Canadian research, innovation, and commercialization opportunities connected to long-term shipbuilding and marine industrial development in Canada.
Nova Graphene notes that CarbonEra™ technologies form part of the company's broader efforts across industrial coatings, composites, and performance materials development.
The Industrial and Technological Benefits program helps drive innovation and economic growth in Canada by encouraging collaboration, research activity, and industrial participation connected to major procurement and shipbuilding initiatives.
You can review 5900+ marine coatings and compare performance attributes directly in the Master Catalog of Coatings.
