Rheology Modifiers / Thickeners for Adhesives and Sealants

Socal® U1S2 by Imerys is an ultrafine, white and odorless coated precipitated calcium carbonate grade. It possesses a very high fineness, roundeal regular crystals and an organic surface treatment. It is used in sealants and adhesives based on polysulfide, polyurethane and silicon. Socal® U1S2 provides rheological control and good slump resistance.

Bentone® 34 by Elementis acts as a rheological additive designed for low to intermediate polarity organic systems. It is an organic derivative of a bentonite clay. It prevents pigment settling during storage and syneresis in thixotropic systems.

• It improves flow and leveling and controls sagging on vertical surfaces and penetration on porous substrates.
• It increases viscosity and provides thixotropy.
• It is used in adhesives, putty & caulking compounds, underbody sealants and sound-absorbing compounds.
• Bentone® 34 has a shelf life of 4 years.

Bentone SD® -1 by Elementis is a very easily dispersible rheological additive. It is an organic derivative of bentonite clay designed for non-polar to medium-polarity aliphatic and other solvent systems.

• It provides thickening & stable viscosity build, controls sag and prevents settling of pigments & fillers.
• It is a cost-effective replacement for conventional organoclay additives.
• It eliminates the need for high shear, pregels, and polar activators.
• It is suitable for silane modified-, silicone-, PU-, & solvent-free adhesives and sealants.
• Recommended dosage level of Bentone SD® -1 is 0.2-2.0% by weight of the system.

Polcarb™ 60S by Imerys is a fine ground calcium carbonate for solvent-based adhesives. It improves rheological properties and reduces water or volatile content of the compound. It is used in polysulfide, hot-melt, bituminous, polyurethane sealants for construction and silicone & hybrid polymer sealants. Polcarb™ 60S is suitable for use in PVC plastisols, tapes/strips, cavity fillers for automotive, acrylic sealants, putties and mastics.

Bentone® 38 by Elementis is a highly efficient rheological additive. It is an organic derivative of hectorite clay. It offers increased viscosity, thixotropy and prevents pigment settling during storage.

• It prevents syneresis in thixotropic systems and provides improved flow and leveling.
• It controls sagging on vertical surfaces and penetration on porous substrates.
• It is designed for low to intermediate polarity organic systems, adhesives and mastic compounds.
• Bentone® 38 has a shelf life of 4 years.

Bentone® 27 by Elementis acts as a rheology modifier for medium to high polarity systems and synthetic binders. It is an organic derivative of a hectorite clay. It increases viscosity and imparts thixotropy. It provides sag resistance on vertical surfaces and penetration on porous substrates.

• It improves flow and leveling and prevents pigment settling during storage.
• It also prevents syneresis in thixotropic systems.
• It is used in adhesives.
• Recommended dosage level is 0.5-1%.
• Bentone® 27 has a shelf life of 4 years.

THIXATROL® PLUS by Elementis is a cost effective and 100% active organic rheological additive. It provides viscosity control, thixotropy and excellent sag resistance. It is seed-resistant and allows high temperature processing, packaging and storage. It exhibits significantly improved inter-coat adhesion properties compared with earlier diamide-based thixotropes.

• It has a broad tolerance to various solvents, including aliphatic, aromatics, ketones and esters.
• Designed for solvent based adhesive and sealant applications.
• It is also suitable for two component polyurethane systems.
• THIXATROL® PLUS has a shelf life of 4 years from the date of manufacture.

BENTONE® EW by Elementis is a rheological additive for waterborne system. It is a highly beneficiated, easily dispersible smectite clay. Provides thermostable aqueous phase viscosity control and promotes fast water release. Imparts thixotropy and enhances texturing and stippling effects. Prevents hard settlement of pigments/ fillers and reduces syneresis. It offers excellent sag stability & slump control, outstanding workability and high amount of elasticity. It minimizes floating and flooding of pigments. BENTONE® EW is designed for adhesive applications. It is suitable for the formulation of acrylic sealants. Recommended dosage level is 0.1-1.0%. It has a shelf life of 4 years from the date of manufacture.

Polcarb™ 40S by Imerys is a fine ground calcium carbonate. It improves rheological properties and reduces water & volatile content of the compound. Polcarb™ 40S is used in polysulfide, hot-melt, solvent-based adhesives, bituminous and polyurethane sealants. It is recommended for silicone & hybrid polymer sealants, PVC plastisols, tapes/strips, cavity fillers for automotive, acrylic sealants, putties and mastics.

Bentone SD® -2 by Elementis acts as a rheological additive. It is an organic derivative of bentonite clay. It disperses very easily, even under low shear conditions.

• It provides stable viscosity build, controls sag & pigment settling.
• It is a cost-effective replacement for conventional organoclay additives.
• It is easy to incorporate and can be added dry to the pigment grinding process without requiring the use of a chemical activator or the preparation of a pregel.
• It may be used for post correction after letdown.
• Bentone SD® -2 is used in polyester repair putties, adhesives and sealants.
• It is designed for use in moderate to high polarity systems containing solvents such a ketones, esters, glycol ethers & alcohols, including polar systems with some aromatic solvents.
• The recommended dosage level is 0.2-1.0%.
• It has a shelf life of 4 years.
