HERMA introduces linerless plus for demanding label applications

Conventional silicone-coated linerless label materials rely on adhesive-free zones to prevent adhesive bleed and buildup on cutting and converting equipment. That design trade-off has limited how much adhesive strength is available where labels need it most, in demanding applications such as logistics and dispatch, where rough cardboard, friction, and mechanical stress are common.
HERMA addresses this with Linerless Plus (400), a self-adhesive linerless label material. It is built on 62Dps, a multi-layer pressure-sensitive adhesive the company is using for the first time in this product range. The two-layer structure allows the adhesive to be applied across the full surface, without the adhesive-free zones that conventional linerless materials use to avoid bleed.
What PPWR means for self-adhesive label adoption
According to HERMA, 62Dps delivers high initial and final adhesion and maintains reliable performance at low temperatures. The company also reports that the absence of adhesive-free zones removes the need to pre-define adhesive-free areas during roll layout, giving converters more flexibility in roll design, and extends cleaning intervals on linerless printers because cutting mechanisms pick up less adhesive residue.
"Because the adhesive can be applied over the entire surface without any adhesive-free zones, labels made with this adhesive adhere particularly well. This property is important in challenging applications, for example logistics and dispatch processes where rough cardboard surfaces, friction or mechanical stresses occur," explains Markus Mateescu, head of silicone development at HERMA.
"Following the successful launch of HERMA InNo-Liner, in which the pressure-sensitive adhesive is only activated immediately before labelling and therefore no siliconisation of the label surface is required, HERMA is now closing another gap in the market with Linerless Plus (400)," says Mateescu. "The new material was developed specifically as a solution for applications where conventional linerless designs using hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives do not deliver satisfactory results."
Labels made from Linerless Plus (400) run on all standard linerless label printers currently on the market, according to HERMA, so converters can switch without additional equipment investment. The material is coated on a 1,000 mm web width and available with a minimum order quantity of 2,000 square meters. HERMA also positions 62Dps as a known quantity: the adhesive has been used commercially for several years, with documented resistance to aging, heat, and light, reducing the need for converters to repeat adhesion testing from scratch.
Because linerless labels eliminate the siliconised backing material that conventional labels leave behind, HERMA points to lower disposal costs and reduced waste - relevant in high-volume areas like logistics. "Linerless labels also play an important role in effectively helping to conserve resources and prevent waste. Both are key objectives of the EU's new Packaging Regulation, or PPWR for short," says Mateescu.
