Description of Desired Solution

A SpecialChem Client is seeking a transparent technology to protect organic particles from high alkaline environment and UV radiation.  

Background

The SpecialChem Client is a raw material supplier for the coating industry. They are currently manufacturing various organic particles for many outdoor applications. Because of this hostile environment (UV radiation, oxygen, radicals, alkalinity), these particles are degraded over time.

They are looking for a technology to protect these particles, enhancing their shelf lives, without spoiling their functions.

Detailed Solution Description

Desired Properties

  • Act as a barrier:
    • Sustain aggressive environment
    • Not permeable for aggressive environment
  • Function in thin layers
    • Targeted layer is
  • Transparent for visible light
  • Photo stable

Environment

  • High alkalinity, pH ≥ 13
    • Hydroxides: e.g. Ca(OH)2, KOH, NaOH etc
    • UV radiation (outdoor)
    • Chemical attack (oxygen, radicals)

Approval to regulations in Europe will have to be considered: REACH approval will be sought.


Possible Routes To Investigate

  • A protective coating.
  • Any organic / inorganic (polymeric) materials. 

Solution that are not of interest

  • Solution which do not fulfill responsible care requirements, e.g. CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic, and toxic) substances, hazardous heavy metals, substances of toxicological and environmental concern.
  • Materials which could not be scaled-up to production in ton scale.
