Description of Desired Solution

A SpecialChem Client is seeking an encapsulation technology capable of releasing polymeric/monomeric substances upon breakage of the capsule.

Background

The SpecialChem Client is a world leader manufacturer of high-value transparent substrates. They have advanced know-how and manufacturing capabilities in functionalizing the surface of their glass/polymeric substrates with specialty coatings. One of their latest developments is a self-healing technology for transparent polymers. Their know-how is to evenly distribute the capsules in the polymer matrix, thanks to a proprietary manufacturing process. But they are lacking the encapsulation technology to fully complete their solution.

The SpecialChem Client is seeking a co-development partner, providing an encapsulation technology capable of releasing polymeric/monomeric substances upon breakage of the capsule.

The selected proposal submitter will have the unique opportunity to be part of the co-development of this technology and enter this specific market, estimated of 1 billion Euro. Due to confidentiality reasons, this market will only be revealed if your proposal is selected.
Once the proposed technology will be fully developed for this market, the co-partnership could anticipate licensing opportunities for other applications for which the SpecialChem Client have no mean in entering.

Detailed Solution Description

  • The material forming the capsule and its content should not absorb visible light. Ideally, the refractive index of the capsule membrane and its content should be adjustable to actual matrixes (range 1.45
  • The capsule size should be in the range 100 nm 100>100>
  • Capsule’s external surface should have the possibility to be functionalized or post functionalized.
  • All used materials should be non CMR.
  • Content of the capsule will be reactive materials such as monomers (e.g. acrylics, isocyanates, etc.), their polymerization being triggered either by an environmental factor (UV, heat, moisture) upon capsule breakage, or by specific catalyst in a different phase. Capsules may also contain low tg material, healing being triggered by heat.
  • Capsules should withstand post-manufacturing treatments: temperature of 100°C up to 3h hours.
  • The polymeric/monomeric substances will be released when a mechanical stress is applied to the polymer matrix.

Possible Routes To Investigate

Protective encapsulation technology including hollow glass fibers, silicate shells, inert polymers towards the capsule content.

Solution that are not of interest

  • Solutions using CMR compounds
  • Solutions for which the capsule degrades at temperature
