Description of Desired Solution

A SpecialChem client is looking for membrane composite material with easy to customize venting features allowing Cl2 off-gassing of different cleaning formulas.

Background

Complex Cleaning formulas containing chlorinated ingredients such as Bleach tend to release chlorine gas over time. This gas generation can create undesirable pressure inside the packaging potentially leading to deformation, leaking or even cracking in extreme cases.

To overcome this problem, the SpecialChem client, a leading Consumer Packaged Goods organization wants to use venting caps containing specific membranes for pressure equalization. As the SpecialChem client is commercializing many different products (formulations and packaging designs), he realized it is complex to find one membrane demonstrating similar performances for all products. Membranes perform differently with different formulas, and sizes of the cap are also different.

As a consequence the SpecialChem Client is seeking venting cap membranes allowing easy adjustment of venting performances (for example by staking different layer of membrane) to be adapted to 20-30 different products.

Capability to easily adjust the venting performance depending on the product is critical.
Cost of the membrane is also critical, as our client is consuming over 100,000,000 units / year!

Detailed Solution Description

SpecialChem client is seeking membranes that must:
  • Vent chlorine gas. Venting target in dry conditions is from 4 to 1 psi in 120 s
  • Vent on both sides (top & bottom) as our client cannot orientate the gasket in its assembly feeding process
  • Not leak liquids (spec G ~1 and viscosity ~10,000 cps)
  • Be compliant with FDA specifications
  • Have acceptable cost per 1000 units: $0.03-0.05

Our client would prefer to purchase material on a roll so that he can punch various gasket sizes.

Possible Routes To Investigate

Solutions may come from:
  • Membrane suppliers
  • Material suppliers
  • Laminators of PTFE onto PE foam
  • Filtration material companies
  • Lightfab
  • Film producers
  • Other

Solution that are not of interest

The SpecialChem client is not interested in solutions that do not vent on both sides and that are not cost effective (>$0.05 / 1000 units).
