Description of Desired Solution

A SpecialChem client is looking for solutions for reducing heat transfer to pipe surfaces.

Background

Insulating the outside parts of pipes is important for both security and functionnality. But traditional insulating methods (mineral wool) are time consuming, especially in narrow places. So an effective solution could lead to hundreds of thousands of euro per year.

Detailed Solution Description

The SpecialChem Client is insulating pipes and channels by using mineral wool and aluminum sheets. In the manufacturing phase, this process is very time consuming, especially in narrow places. The Client is looking for a solution that can ease this work either by using a different method or covering the pipes with special materials/paint.
  • Pipes to be insulated are normally carbon steel pipes from 10mm to 400mm. The maximum temperature for the liquids inside the pipes are 180°C, so the solution should be able to withstand this temperature.
  • The accepted surface temperature of the pipe with the solution applied is 60°C
  • The cost should not come to be more expensive than the existing solution from a total point of view (material + installation).

Possible Routes To Investigate

  • Painted types of insulation
  • Molded insulation

Solution that are not of interest

Traditional methods, (mineral wool and aluminum sheets…) are not of interest for our Client.

Anticipated Next Steps with Respondents

When the solution is tested and seen feasible, the SpecialChem Client is willing to implement the solution as fast as possible.

Other Comments / Important Considerations

The SpecialChem Client is interested in insulating technologies that can be applied once pipes are in situ.
