Description of Desired Solution

A SpecialChem Client is seeking a portable technology to bind sheets of paper or light cardboards. The solution must be safe and easy to use.

Background

Waterborne adhesive technologies are used to bind paper to paper and/or cardboard. Despite the versatility of these technologies, users are hampered by the time it takes to dry. This is due to the high water content and the time it takes to evaporate from the glue bond. This high water content also increases the chance of paper wrinkling.

To solve these problems, non-waterborne adhesives instant gluing solutions were developed, including Cyanoacrylates. But such technologies are usually hazardous (irritant, potential for sensitization) that do not allow them to be widely adopted.

The SpecialChem Client is an adhesive manufacturer who is willing to adopt or develop a solution to answer this market need. The projected annual volume of selected technology represents $2 million in annual retail sales in the USA only

Detailed Solution Description

The SpecialChem Client is seeking to develop, license or buy a fast drying/curing adhesive that demonstrates the following performance:
  • Fast curing or drying
    • Ideal is 15-30 seconds with no visible paper wrinkling
    • Target is anything with rate of set less than 5 minutes
  • Ideally demonstrated safe for use; or with the potential to be granted>
    • pH Range from 2.5 to 11
  • Easy to use solution:
    • Possibility of being operated/used by adults or kids
    • Stand-alone solution (no special equipment or conditions)
  • Bonding: minimum tensile strength 750-1000 psi (wood to wood assemblies)
    • Anything below this range will be evaluated based on the set of information provided
  • Low/No odor
  • Final appearance should be colorless or ‘neutral color’
  • Anti-wrinkling when used in paper to paper assemblies
  • Ideally washable from other substrate than paper or cardboard
    • Example: Fingers/hands, Fabrics, etc.
  • A shelf life of 2 years is preferred

Possible Routes To Investigate

  • Hybrid technologies
    • Example: microencapsulation of dry adhesive
  • A dispensing system accelerating the drying process

Solution that are not of interest

  • Solvent-based systems
  • Technologies requiring safety labels
    • Example: Cyanoacrylates
  • Solutions requiring major R&D investments
  • Impossibility of being packaged in pocket-sized container

Anticipated Next Steps with Respondents

The goal is to enter this market as early as 2016.

Other Comments / Important Considerations

The SpecialChem Client will consider licensing a foreign technology that is not yet commercialized in the US market.
