Description of Desired Solution

SpecialChem client is looking for novel ways to achieve sound abatement in thin films that are cost effective (the cost should not add more than about $0.055/lb) and can be processed by conventional film manufacturing process (there is no restriction to the process, however, the preferred is blow film without lamination). Solutions should be halogen free, phthalate free or environment-friendly.

Background

SpecialChem client desires to reduce the sound generated from current thin film products as they may be handled and used in several end-use applications. The sound abatement solution should be complementary and not adversely affect the variety of other performance requirements of the film.

Detailed Solution Description

The goal is to reduce the sound generated from the multi-layer film through crinkling by at least 10 dBA as it is handled and in end-use applications without sacrificing properties such as tear, toughness, elongation to break, clarity, etc... Current film structures can contain Nylon, PET, and/or EVOH Physical properties of the film would include:
  • Film caliper in the range of 75 -100 microns +/- 3 microns
  • Tear resistance greater than 150 g in both Machine and Transverse direction
  • Spencer Impact strength greater than 2000 g
  • Ultimate elongation greater than 300% fr both machine and transverse direction
  • Film clarity greater than 90%

Possible Routes To Investigate

A multi-layer films construction that enable reduction in sound generated can be considered. The use of a new material can be considered The use of an additive that enable reduction in sound generated can be considered.

Solution that are not of interest

Materials, additives and coatings that are not FDA approved are not of interest for our client.

Anticipated Next Steps with Respondents

SpecialChem client is interested in solutions that are available commercially and can be evaluated as part of current research and development efforts. Of interest are also new developments that may be within six to twelve months of commercialization.

Other Comments / Important Considerations

The cost should not add more than about $0.01/msi (about $0.055/lb). SpecialChem client would appreciate if the solution provider can propose a method of sound measurement that is quantitative and that can be translated into audible differences and have consistent measurements.

Type of Outcome expected

  • Ready-to-be-used solutions
  • New developments that may be within 6 to 12 months of commercialization
