Seeking Biodegradable Polymer For Liquid Packaging

In the framework of its Corporate Social Responsibility efforts, the SpecialChem Client is exploring options to replace its current plastic-based primary packaging (in contact with the formulation) with a biodegradable packaging.

A successful solution would fully or partially replace the existing packaging material (Low Density Polyethylene) used in finished product. The current usage is in the range of several tons per year.

The Client is looking for solutions covering the following needs:

• Inert container: no compound migration into the product
• Safety: non-toxic product for medical grade, under EP/USP/FDA regulations.
• Should be able to cope with 3 year shelf life at room temperature conditions
• Active protection against oxygen and light (would be a plus)
• Compatibility with “blow fill seal” technology (would be a plus)
  • Basics principle of BFS
• Should act as a barrier to the suspension inside
• Claim of biodegradability must be supported with testing data. Potential testing methodologies include, but are not limited to: ASTM D6002-96, ASTM D6400, EN 13432.

A bio-sourced material/formulation.
An additive to Low Density Polyethylene to improve its biodegradability.

Polymer formulation that don’t have the potential of scaling up to multi-tons per year industrial processes and that are equivalent of the current LDPE.
