Seeking Bio-Compatible Adhesive For Skin/Hair Application

The SpecialChem Client is looking to commercialize new products for cosmetic applications, that will be fixed to skin/hair. They have developed the support, but the classical adhesive chemistries currently known contain latex, cyanoacrylates or cellophane (rosinate derivative). These are unfortunately not satisfying with targeted applications, because they present a risk of type VI allergy, causes skin discomfort, are not long lasting enough, or because they are very difficult to remove.

The SepcialChem Client is thus looking for a supplier or a partner capable of providing the adhesive solution, meeting all criteria.

The potential business concerns all semi-permanent make-up – a significant trend worldwide. It can also concern lashes, brow and hair extensions, body tattoo.

• Adhesive performance: provide a semi-permanent link between the make-up accessory (substrate) and the skin during minimum 3 days, ideally 5 days
• Substrate: nylon hair fiber of 0,05mm large, or polyester objects of 0,13 mm large.
• The adhesive should also be easily removable with a classical make-up remover, or a specific solvent that has to be compliant with cosmetic regulation and have optimal skin tolerance.
• Safety: formulation fully formulated in order to minimize the risks of allergies and cause no skin irritation, and detailed analytical composition will be requested If possible safety data to prove it.

• Regulation: compliant with most, if not all, international cosmetic regulations.
• Applicability: ease of application on skin or hair, with a film or drops that should not be bigger than dimension of a hair diameter.
• In use, the adhesive should not form small amounts and must be invisible (no colorations).

Fully formulated adhesive solution.

The SpecialChem Client is also open to proposal of raw materials having the right safety profile and sticking properties if a specific process is requested. But this is not the privileged solution.

Alternative forms to liquid glue, like adhesive films or other innovative ideas, can also be submitted and will be considered positively.

Signature of NDA contract and/or evaluation contract.

Revue of the safety dossier by the Client's toxicologists then response in around 15 days after reception of the safety dossier.

If OK, receive samples in order to run performance tests in Research & Innovation, with various make-up accessories or patches. These objects selected for the performance tests will either be chosen among new innovative products or already in development make-up items. Please note that during the process of evaluation of the product the Client will need information on compositions for which there will be response in around 15 days after reception of the samples and information on compositions requested. 

If tests are satisfying in terms of both safety and performance, a process of homologation of the glue formula will start where various criteria will be evaluated: in addition to worldwide cosmetic regulations, compliance with specific internal formulation rules and restrictions, and complementary test such as stability and microbiology. 

Then, depending on each marketing specific brief, a launch could be possible within one of the brands.

A detailed analytical description of the adhesive will be requested to allow the SpecialChem Client to check for compliance with internal safety rules (more stringent than regulations).

Full safety profile will not be required if the full analytical detailed profile is known (The SpecialChem Client has a strong expertise in that field).
