Advances in Developments of PFAS free Polymer Processing Aids

Societal and Regulatory pressures have put Per-Fluoro-Alkyl-Substances (PFAS) in the spotlight for exposure limits or outright bans. Deemed “forever chemicals” due to their persistence, they should be called “everywhere chemicals” because they are used broadly throughout industry – and the plastics industry is no exception.

Many polymer resin, film, and finished article producers are looking for viable alternatives to PFAS-containing polymer processing aids (PPA), but there are few solutions that have both the broad performance and regulatory food contact status of these materials.  In 2023, Dover Chemical introduced the DoverClear™ line of PPAs that are both PFAS-free and have the extra benefit of being a phosphite antioxidant.

Since then, Dover has expanded the functionality of the DoverClear line to include additional processes with different resins, showing not only the ability to clear melt fracture in blown film applications, but also reducing die-lip buildup (DLBU) in cast film applications and beyond.
