Polymers are permeable in general, and their barrier properties may impact their selection for a specific application. For example, in packaging, ineffective barrier properties leave the product vulnerable to the effect of environmental factors, such as water, humidity, and oxygen.
Consequences of compromised barrier properties
In some applications, the compromise to gas barrier properties could lead to severe results:
- Product spoilage: For food packaging or containers, loss of barrier properties can allow oxygen, moisture, or other contaminants to reach the food, leading to spoilage, reduced shelf life, or changes in taste and texture.
- Functional issues: For example, a battery separator film needs to be impermeable to certain ions to function effectively. Loss of barrier properties can lead to malfunctions.
- Environmental impact: Increased permeability in some applications can allow harmful substances like gases or chemicals to leak out of the polymer, posing environmental hazards.
