For successful foam creation, both the material and the process play a key role:

1. Choice of polymer:

• Flexible polymer chains allow for bubble formation and expansion during foaming. Low melt strength ensures the polymer doesn't solidify too quickly, giving bubbles time to expand and become trapped.
• The polymer should have some degree of gas solubility to dissolve the blowing agent gas. Good gas diffusivity allows even distribution of the dissolved gas before solidification.
• The polymer needs to withstand the processing temperatures involved in foaming without significant degradation.
• The chosen polymer should not react negatively with the blowing agent used.

2. Processing conditions:

• Temperature & pressure: These parameters influence gas solubility, bubble formation, and solidification. Precise control is necessary for achieving desired foam properties.
• Cooling or pressure change: The foaming process often involves cooling the polymer melt or reducing the pressure. This triggers gas expansion and bubble formation within the solidifying polymer.
