How to improve abrasion resistance?

Last update on Jan 15, 2026

Abrasion occurs when materials deteriorate due to friction as they rub or slide against each other. Over time, exposure to UV radiation, extreme temperatures, and chemicals can degrade a plastic’s properties, including its resistance to abrasion.

Why is abrasion resistance important?

Plastics that resist force and abrasion minimize damage, maintain their shape, and ensure long-term quality. Additionally, these plastics often possess other exceptional features such as temperature resistance and waterproofing.

These high-durability plastics are widely used in heavy industries such as manufacturing, engineering, transportation, and consumer goods, especially in products that demand long-term reliability.

Coefficient of friction & abrasion resistance

The coefficient of friction (COF) measures the force needed to overcome friction between two surfaces as they slide against each other. A lower COF means less friction, allowing the surfaces to slide more easily with less resistance.

Materials with a low COF are often preferred for reducing wear and tear. However, a low COF doesn't always equate to high abrasion resistance.

For instance, in plastic gear, a low COF is desirable to minimize energy loss due to friction. However, it shouldn't be so low that it compromises the gear's ability to mesh properly and resist wear on the teeth.
