Plasticizers are typically non-volatile, colorless liquids that are added to polymers to enhance their flexibility, extensibility, and processability. Key features include their ability to lower the glass transition temperature, decrease viscosity, and improve the overall durability of the final product. Used in PVC flooring, automotive interiors, cables, and roofing materials. 

Alternatives to plasticizers include internal plasticization methods, where the polymer itself is chemically modified to achieve similar flexibility. A notable trend in the plasticizer market has been shift towards high molecular weight and non-phthalate plasticizers due to regulatory pressures and environmental concerns. Sub-types include phthalates, adipates, and citrates.
