OCSiAl and GEO Partner to Boost Europe’s Battery Chain with Graphene Nanotubes
Last update on Dec 5, 2024
, one of the leaders in single-wall carbon nanotube production, and Green Energy Origin (GEO), a new energy platform focused on raw materials innovation, have signed a long-term manufacturing agreement. This partnership aims to produce TUBALL™ BATT graphene nanotube suspensions in the Czech Republic to enhance the performance of lithium-ion battery cathodes. The collaboration will strengthen the European battery supply chain, improving its effectiveness, resilience, and sustainability.
10,000 Tons of Nanotube Suspension to Boost 5 Million EV Cathodes
The planned annual production capacity is 10,000 metric tons of nanotube suspension, enough to improve the cathodes of up to 5 million electric vehicles (EVs) with 65-70 kWh battery packs. The product has already gained market acceptance and is in high demand among EV battery producers, particularly those using thick LFP and NCM cathodes, as well as advanced battery technologies like high-nickel, low-cobalt, and single-crystalline NCM cathodes.
The nanotube suspension increases energy density by enabling up to 98.8% active material content, thanks to 10-60 times reduction in conductive additive loading compared to standard solutions. It also boosts discharge power, enhances battery safety by lowering resistance (DCR), and improves cohesion between cathode material particles by forming a strong network of graphene nanotubes that bonds the particles together.
'Looking forward, our partnership will prioritize sourcing raw materials for batteries, enabling critical applications in electric mobility, energy storage, and robotics, all in pursuit of a more sustainable future. Together with OCSiAl, we are dedicated to achieving technical advancements, lowering carbon emissions, and refining manufacturing processes to drive a fully electric, sustainable future. We are excited to embark on this promising journey with such a respected company,' stated Martin Saewe, president of GEO Europe.
'OCSiAl has selected GEO for its OEM production in Europe thanks to their experience with cutting-edge technologies and established highly efficient manufacturing processes. The production processes will be designed and carried out in accordance with IATF 16949 and VDA 6.3 standards, tailored to meet the high demands of the automotive industry. The site will also be regularly audited by OCSiAl and its automotive clients,' said Konstantin Notman, CEO of OCSiAl Group.
Tony Ma, CEO of GEO, remarked, 'This is a good start, and I am optimistic that our two companies will achieve even greater success together, contributing to a greener and cleaner planet. I have full confidence in this long-term partnership, as we share aligned values, strategic goals, a collaborative spirit, and robust supply chain capabilities.'
This new partnership strengthens OCSiAl in the global new energy materials market. The company has licensed production partners Shanghai Haiyi and Shenyang Huijing in China for graphene nanotube-based suspensions used in both anodes and cathodes. Additionally, OCSiAl has recently launched in-house manufacturing of nanotube dispersions for high-performance anode applications in Europe, including silicon-rich anodes and fast-charging graphite.
